Making carbon in stars

چکیده

The triple alpha (3α) process plays an important role in the production of C in stars. Its rate is known with an accuracy of about 12%. We examine the corresponding uncertainties introduced in the description of pre-supernova stars, of nucleosynthesis in a core-collapse SN explosion, and of the production of C during the third dredge-up in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. For the AGB case we consider also the effects of uncertainties in the N(p, γ)O rate. We conclude that the present accuracy of the 3α rate is inadequate and describe new experiments that will lead to a more accurate value.

The Discovery of Two Nearby Carbon Dwarfs

The comparison of optical and 2MASS near-infrared photometry for large samples of catalogued proper motion stars has the potential to discover previously unrecognized nearby objects of rare type. In this paper we present the discovery of two new carbon dwarfs, LSR 2105+2514 and LP 758-43, which were drawn from proper motion lists and which lie in a sparsely populated part of optical/near-IR col...

Lithium in LMC Carbon Stars

Nineteen carbon stars that show lithium enrichment in their atmospheres have been discovered among a sample of 674 carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Six of the Li-rich carbon stars are of J-type, i.e., with strong C isotopic features. No superLi-rich carbon stars were found. The incidence of lithium enrichment among carbon stars in the LMC is much rarer than in the Galaxy, and about f...

The APM Survey for Cool Carbon Stars in the Galactic Halo - II The Search for Dwarf Carbon Stars

We present proper motion measurements for carbon stars found during the APM Survey for Cool Carbon Stars in the Galactic Halo ( Totten & Irwin, 1998). Measurements are obtained using a combination of POSSI, POSSII and UKST survey plates supplemented where necessary by CCD frames taken at the Isaac Newton Telescope. We find no significant proper motion for any of the new APM colour-selected carb...

Quantitative analysis of carbon isotopic ratios in carbon stars

We present the result of a quantitative analysis of 12C/13C ratios in 26 J-type carbon stars. The 12C/13C ratios are determined from lines of the CN red system around 8000 Å, using the iso-intensity method and line-blanketed model atmospheres. The average of 12C/13C ratios in the 26 stars is 4.7 ± 2.8 (standard deviation). All the stars studied, except for two stars, have 12C/13C ratios smaller...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
